CSULB alumnus John Underwood (left) interviews journalism professor Christopher Burnett at the SSPA building on Wednesday. Underwood is filming a documentary that discusses the “changing face of the traditional town hall process,” such as using Twitter during town hall meetings with politicians. Underwood interviewed Burnett to appraise “an objective assessment” of the positive or negative results of the new process.

Playing dead

Nicoal Sheen, a junior political science major and a member of FORCE, plays dead as part of the "Die In" in front of the Speaker's Platform on Wednesday afternoon to protest the "global gag rule." The gag rule, FORCE members said, is a US policy mandating "that no US family planning assistance can be provided to foreign NGOs that use funding to perform, promote, or lobby for abortion in their country. An NGO is a Non-Governmental Organization. According to Sheen, it "is important about the issue on campus about women in a global society as a result of the gag."

On behalf of the Daily 49er, I would like to sincerely welcome our entire campus community to a new semester. Although we are on our third week, the photo department has been busy and therefore, our weekly photo blog is currently under construction. This semester is historical for the Daily 49er as our whole content was redesigned. Another historical moment at the beach this week, the first of its kind, is The President's Forum on International Human Rights: Modern Genocides and global responsibility. Throughout the week, faculty members, notable speakers and authors as well as exhibits and cultural music and dances were being performed. To put this forum in perspective, academy award winning director Steven Spielberg and the honorable Dr. Francis Deng, United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities, showed their support. Spielberg gave his support via video and Dr. Deng spoke at The Carpenter Performing Arts Center. The forum is designed to raise awareness and to understand the complexities facing human advancement with regards to genocide related content. On Friday morning, our photo blog will be completed and we invite you to our blog and enjoy its contents. Our photo blog will be interactive which will feature poll questions. In addition, a photo essay, news story, and video of certain news event, locally and around campus will also be featured. Again, I welcome each and everyone and have a successful and productive new year. Go Beach!
